The hosts had plenty of chances but perhaps feared it wouldn’t be their day when Cristiano Ronaldo put his first half penalty wide of the mark.

Jadon Sancho did put United ahead shortly after, but more wasted chances from Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes allowed Middlesbrough to level through a controversial Matt Crook effort.

Ralf Rangnick’s side huffed and puffed during extra time, but the match went to penalties.

However it was Chris Wilder's side who held their nerve to win 8-7 on spot-kicks and dump the Premier League giants out of the cup.

  • Final score: Man United 1 Middlesbrough 1 (Boro win 8-7 on penalties)
  • Ralf Rangnick's side missed a number of chances, including a first half Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.
  • After Jadon Sancho opened the scoring, Matt Crooks scored a controversial equaliser followed an alleged handball by Duncan Watmore.
