Manchester United criticised by legend Jaap Stam for ‘using Donny Van de Beek wrong’ as Everton urged to make most of Dutchman’s qualities

Jaap Stam has criticised his former club Manchester United for their failure in getting the best out of Donny van de Beek.
Van de Beek sealed a deadline day loan Everton, where he will have the chance to reinvigorate his career at Goodison Park under new boss Frank Lampard.
The Dutchman has had a torrid 18 months at Old Trafford, having failed to get regular minutes under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his temporary successor Ralf Rangnick.
He's made just 27 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils in a season-and-a-half at the club, with the vast majority coming off the bench with little time remaining on the clock.
And Stam insists United did not use his compatriot 'properly' before he sealed his switch to Everton on loan.
"Donny has qualities that fit in perfectly with Ajax and the Eredivisie, but he could not adapt to United's style of play," Stam told Dutch outlet .
"I hope he will be able to get minutes under his belt at Everton and that his qualities will be used properly."
Stam added: "United would certainly not have performed less effectively if they had fielded two holding midfielders, allowing Van de Beek to play higher up the pitch and be of importance in the build-up of attacks, along with Scott McTominay and behind Bruno Fernandes.
"Luck plays its part but Donny always shows a great work ethic, runs many miles a game and is comfortable on the ball.
"He can be influential in switching play and has the capacity to succeed as a box-to-box player but he was never able to operate in that position."
United legend Edwin van der Sar also sent his best wishes to Van de Beek on his move to Everton.
Commenting on an Instagram post from the Everton loanee, the former shot-stopper said: "Better luck with this club in the North West of England Donny!"
The signing of Van de Beek is a short-term move that could suit all parties. It is understood there is no option to buy included in the deal while Everton will cover the cost of wages and pay a loan fee.
"Now I can say I am an Everton player, I am really happy and can't wait to help the team," Van De Beek said.
"I think it is a great club. There are really good players here and I came because I want to help them go up the table."
