Liverpool increased the heat on Man City by moving to within three points of the Premier League leaders with a stunning 6-0 win over Leeds.

Mohamed Salah, as he has been so often this season, was the star of the show with two goals and an assist.

Sadio Mane also netted a brace in the match, while centre-backs Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk both go in on the act.

It was a tremendous result for Liverpool, who warmed up for the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea in perfect fashion.

For Leeds, though, it's another heavy defeat and they have now conceded ten goals in their last two games, having also shipped four to bitter rivals Manchester United last Sunday.

Conceding high volumes of goals as well could prove to be costly for Marcelo Bielsa's side, who have a goal difference of -27, with only bottom placed Norwich having a worse figure.

In contrast, the huge win for Jurgen Klopp's team boosts their goal difference significantly, having started the day on +44 and ending it on +50, going four ahead of Man City.

Whilst no one could question the result or the performance for Liverpool, Leeds did have their moments when the scoreline was closer.

After just five minutes of play, Dan James was very unfortunate not to steal the ball off Alisson after he took too long to clear the ball.

Whilst he got a touch on the ball, the Brazilian goalkeeper, a penalty could have been awarded to the visitors after his trailing leg caught the Welshman.

However, Leeds did no favours of their own defensively, and conceded a penalty after just 15 minutes of play.

Andy Robertson, as ever, was marauding down the left hand side, and as he crossed the ball in, his effort was blocked by Stuart Dallas illegally who was in the penalty area.

Michael Oliver awarded the spot kick, and Salah, sent his strike into the bottom right.

Again, Leeds could have had something to cheer about when the game was still competitive, and had Raphinha timed his run better, would have equalised for the Yorkshire side.

James teed up Rodrigo to drive at the defence and drew in Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The ball was then sent over from the left and tapped home by Raphinha but the he had gone early with his run and VAR confirmed he was offside.

That was as good as it got for Leeds though, who conceded the second mid-way through the first half.

Matip, as he has done on many occasions strode forward from defence and played the ball right to Salah who returned the pass.

The centre-back then found himself into the penalty box and finished off the chance like a seasoned forward, clipping the ball over Illan Meslier.

Leeds were then hit again minutes later when Oliver awarded another penalty after Mane was brought down by captain Luke Ayling.

Salah, stepping up again, sent the ball the same direction but into the top corner this time.

In the second half, Liverpool weren't as relentless for large periods, but decided to put Leeds to the sword with three goals in the last 13 minutes.

Mane netted two tap ins, the first after substitute Jordan Henderson sent the ball across the penalty box following a superb reverse pass from Salah to play him in.

The second came after the ball kindly bounced towards him when Meslier initially saved Divock Origi's shot.

Netherlands captain van Dijk then rounded the scoring when planting his header from a Robertson in-swinging corner.
