Mohamed Salah struck twice from the spot, while Joel Matip's neat finish gave them a commanding 3-0 lead at half time.

Sadio Mane got a late brace before Virgil van Dijk rounded off a fine night at the office for Jurgen Klopp's men.

It was the ideal sign-off for Liverpool ahead of their Carabao Cup final date with Chelsea on Sunday, live on talkSPORT.

But this result, plus Manchester City's surprise defeat to Tottenham, has given renewed belief that the Merseysiders can catch up with Pep Guardiola's men.

Klopp insists Liverpool aren't looking at Man City, however.

"Honestly we don't chase City, we try to win our football games," he said. "The thing is now we have the cup final at the weekend, City play (Everton) and they might probably win this game and it's six points again before we play the next Premier League game.

"We don't have to count these things. We just have to win the game.

"It is an interesting period of the season definitely: we play the final, then FA Cup, then West Ham and no-one should count the points before we play them because we lost there."

They may be second in the table right now but Liverpool are running away with it in the Premier League's goal and assist charts this season.

Mane's double saw him get his 10th and 11th league goals of the season and go third in the goalscoring charts.

He's behind Diogo Jota (12) and top scorer Mohamed Salah, who has 19 league goals for the season.

Salah, who supplied the assist for Matip's goal, is joint-top of the Premier League's assist charts with teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, with both contributing ten league this term.

Third in the assist charts is left-back Andy Robertson, who took his total to nine as he supplied the cross to Van Dijk, who powerfully headed beyond Illan Meslier.
