Georginio Wijnaldum should have remained at Liverpool rather than join Paris Saint-Germain, says Dutch hero and former Premier League star Rafael van der Vaart.

Wijnaldum, 31, left Anfield on the expiry of his contract at the end of last year, but has endured a difficult time since his move to the French capital.

Joining the club on a free transfer, the Dutchman has netted just three times and contributed to three assists in 31 appearances for the Ligue 1 leaders.

Given his treacherous club form, Ajax's Steven Berghuis has moved ahead of him in the national team pecking order.

Berghuis joined the Eredivisie champions from Feyenoord in the summer, and started in the Netherlands' victory over Denmark ahead of the former Liverpool man.

Wijnaldum's PSG struggles have led to reports he could move on after just one season, with a transfer elsewhere likely this summer.

Van der Vaart now hopes Wijnaldum realises he made the wrong choice in moving to the French giants.

"Wijnaldum made a mistake in choosing PSG," said the former Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid playmaker.

"Meanwhile, Berghuis made an excellent choice choosing to move from Feyenoord to Ajax.

"Now Georginio will understand why making the right choice is so important."

During his time on Merseyside, Wijnaldum scored 22 goals and registered 16 assists in 237 appearances for Liverpool.

But more than his goals and assist record, he was a trusted cog in Jurgen Klopp's engine room and played a key role in the middle of his Reds side, with his consistency often praised.

He also got his hands on various honours including the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Premier League title.

A regular under Klopp, his struggles in Paris have proved the grass is not always greener on the other side, and the player has since signalled his intentions to leave PSG.

Despite his struggles, Wijnaldum is hoping to make the Netherlands World Cup squad for the tournament in eight months' time.

With the draw for the winter 2022 tournament taking place on Friday, his side will be in pot two and will, therefore, be in a group with one of hosts Qatar, Brazil, Belgium, France, Argentina, England, Spain or Portugal.
