‘I’d do it straight away’ – Manchester United legend Jaap Stam makes himself available for coaching role as Red Devils continue search for next permanent manager

Erik ten Hag is the reported favourite for the Manchester United job but another Dutchman in the form of Jaap Stam appears to have thrown his hat in the ring for a role at his old club.

Stam represented the Red Devils as a player for three years, winning three Premier League titles, including during their famous treble-winning 1998/99 season.

Sir Alex Ferguson has made no secret of his regret at selling Stam when he did, and there's a sense of unfinished business for the former defender at Old Trafford.

The 49-year-old didn't outright say he wanted the Man United job but would jump at the chance to take a coaching role in some capacity.

“If they [Manchester United] would ask me [to take a coaching/managerial role], I would do it straight away without a doubt," Stam told .

“You know United is my life as well. I’ve had great seasons over there, won trophies and it’s been very important for me."

After retiring in 2007, Stam moved into the world of management, taking charge of Ajax's youth team, PEC Zwolle and Feyenoord in his native Netherlands. He also had a two-year spell in charge of Championship side Reading.

Stam accepts that the call from Man United probably won't come but that doesn't mean he isn't interested in making a return to Old Trafford.

"In any way, if I could help them out, I would be tempted to do it," he added.

"I know they are probably not going to come and call me, but also in a different role, and that counts I think for every player who has played for United. I think everyone is very eager to help the club and hopefully, bring them to the absolute top level.

“Like I said, you never know, that would be interesting.

“It’s all about owners, it’s all about technical directors, it’s all about coaches that step in, who do they want as assistant coaches. That’s how it goes.”
