Manchester United legend Roy Keane could be set for a return to management with Hibernian following the sacking of Shaun Maloney.

Maloney, 39, took charge of 19 matches and was relieved of his duties by the Scottish Premiership club after just four months in charge.

reports Red Devils legend Keane is understood to be keen on the role having discussed it with close friends in recent days.

A regular TV pundit on Sky Sports, Keane has not been a manager since his sacking by Ipswich Town in 2011.

Before taking the reins at Portman Road, he also had a stint at Sunderland, spending two years on Wearside.

He also held assistant manager roles with the Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

David Gray has taken over from Maloney for the final games of the current campaign, and began with a 1-0 victory over St Mirren.

A club statement on the decision to sack Maloney read: “Our hope in appointing Shaun Maloney as a young, highly regarded coach was that he would help us take the club forward, but ultimately it didn't work out.

“We thank Shaun and his coaching staff for all their hard work and efforts and wish them all the best for the future.”

Hibs have four matches left to play this season and are keen on finishing the campaign as high as possible.

They make the trip to the Tony Macaroni Arena next weekend to face Livingston, and then welcome Aberdeen to Easter Road on May 7.

Hibs then face Dundee in midweek, before taking on St Johnstone in their final league game at home on May 15.

It remains to be seen if Keane decides to take on the role in the Scottish capital, but it looks as though his time as a pundit could soon becoming to an end temporarily.
