They could have been playing West Ham, but Aaron Cresswell was sent off against Eintracht Frankfurt, and the Bundesliga side ended up winning 1-0 in a game that boiled over on several occasions.
David Moyes was dismissed for lashing out at a ball boy and Frankfurt fans stormed the pitch at full time.
There was also European heartbreak for Leicester City as Jose Mourinho masterminded another victory over Brendan Rodgers, with Tammy Abraham scoring the only goal of the game.
