Ryan Reynolds jokes about maths skills and Paul Mullin channels Jurgen Klopp as Wrexham knock Stockport off top of National League ahead of final week of the season

Wrexham co-owner and Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds expressed his delight, and bafflement, at the club going top of the National League with just one game to go of the season.

The Welsh side beat promotion rivals Stockport County 3-0 to move above them into top spot on goal difference, in a league where only the champion gains automatic promotion to the Football League.

A goal from star signing Paul Mullin and two from Ollie Palmer secured a gigantic three points, which could well see them avoid the drama of the play-offs.

Stockport still have the advantage with a game in hand on Wrexham, but it’s proved an incredible turnaround for the Welsh side, who were 11 points off the top as recently as April. In the Dragons’ last 20 games in all competitions they’ve won 16 and lost just one.

Wrexham also have an FA Trophy final date with Bromley to look forward to.

If they fail to land first place, Wrexham will have to compete for a return to the EFL via the play-offs, a scenario which seems to have confused Canadian owner Reynolds.

He Tweeted: “I don’t know what happens from here. Math has never been my strong suit.

"But @Wrexham_AFC supporters did their part. As they’ve always done. I’m so proud of this club."

A huge part of Wrexham’s sudden success has been the signings of forward duo Mullin and Palmer, with the former EFL target men adding a huge goal threat.

Mullin was signed from Cambridge United last summer after breaking the League Two scoring record with 32 goals, and is currently on 26 in the National League.

A former Liverpool academy player, Mullin has clearly been watching his old team, copying Reds manager Jurgen Klopp post-match.

The 27-year-old striker approached fans at the Racecourse Ground in what could be their final home game of the season, before blasting out Klopp's trademark three first-pumps to which the crowd responded.
