Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium ‘has disqualified itself as a venue for future major sporting events’ after fans at the Europa League final were left drinking from lawn sprinklers due to a lack of water.

An enthralling clash saw Rangers narrowly miss out on glory as they lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt. However, the matchday experience was tough for the fans in more than one way.

Supporters of both teams in southern Spain were left angry by the final’s poor organisation, according to , as attendees were left to endure the Seville heat without any water on sale for the majority of the night.

Rangers have already lodged a complaint to UEFA about the stadium's unsuitability, with European football’s governing body saying it will examine what occurred.

UEFA announced it will assess the final alongside the local organising committee, the stadium operator, the food and drink providers and the police.

Such a lack of water meant fans were unable to drink until they found water sprinklers outside, or back at their hotels, .

"To make matters worse, after the game there was almost nowhere to buy anything outside of the stadium either," the German sports outlet reported.

"Many fans only got something to drink in their hotels or stood under lawn sprinklers. The taxi situation also proved catastrophic. All in all, Seville was not a worthy venue for the final - and UEFA's award was a mistake."

Fans who travelled from Frankfurt to see their team win a first European final since 1980 should have been in jubilant mood after a 5-4 penalty win, but some claim to have gone as many as six hours without water.

Kiosks inside the stadium were reportedly closed 10 minutes after kick off, with police then stopping those desperate for a drink who tried to break into the club stalls.

Kicker claim a burst water pipe was the cause of the chaos, but the 43,000 seater stadium also caused other problems, with one fan injured as something collapsed below him.

The situation with a lack of taxis was also labelled as ‘catastrophic,’ putting a slant on what should have been a a delightful night for the German victors.
