UK football fans are set for a midweek Match of the Day showing Champions League highlights while Amazon will also broadcast the competition.

BT Sport currently own exclusive rights to broadcast UEFA’s club competitions and their highlights, having outbid Sky Sports in 2015 to take over Europe’s top honours from them and ITV.

That package cost £1.2billion and runs until the end of the 2023/24 season, but they will now share the rights from 2024-2027

The BBC will be showing highlights from all Champions League matches on Wednesday nights, while Amazon will get a share of the top tier alongside the Europa League and Conference League.

However, it’s not all bad news for BT, who will retain the majority of the rights, and will be able to show more matches than before due to the increased schedule when the new Champions League format begins in 2024.

Amazon made their way into football for the 2019/20 season when they began showing 20 Premier League games a season, mainly around the Christmas period, however their footprint will now increase considerably.

Meanwhile, the BBC will continue to provide free highlights for fans, adding to their Premier League rights which have been broadcast since 2004.

Elsewhere, in France, Canal+ have hinted at how much a deal could be by paying €480m [£416m] for three years of Champions League rights starting in 2024.
