David Moyes has candidly revealed why two players decided not to join West Ham this summer, and why three others were allowed to leave.

The Hammers have had a productive summer in an effort to capitalise on last season’s heroics where they made a run to the Europa League semi-final final and finished seventh in the Premier League.

Five new players have been brought in for an estimated £100million, including striker Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo, defender Nayef Aguerd and stand-out Burnley star Maxwel Cornet.

Moyes was planning even more signings, though, in the shape of former loanee Jesse Lingard and Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes.

Lingard, who instead left Manchester United for Nottingham Forest, played on loan at the London Stadium in 2021 and was one of the best players in the league during his six-month spell.

However, that wasn’t enough to convince him to return to West Ham, as Moyes revealed.

“The owners and directors made a great offer for Jesse,” the Scot said. “It was no failing from the club. Jesse was entitled to choose where he wanted to go.”

Moyes also commented on a rumoured move for Portugal international Nunes which failed to come to fruition.

“We bid for him but the boy chose not to come,” he said. “We are trying to add players that can make us competitive and try and put us near the top of the league.

“We want good quality players. We don't want to fill places for the sake of doing so.”

Moyes added his side are still pushing for more players, saying:  “We are trying really hard, we have made lots of offers.

“If I was going to give an update, I would give it to my club team. I don't know about Memphis Depay.”

Discussing departures, he continued: “It was important Arthur [Masuaku] left, we wanted to get him more playing time, the same with [Nikola] Vlasic, we couldn't guarantee to find a position.

“Issa [Diop] felt he was not going to be involved as much so it was best for him as well.”
