Graeme Souness and Simon Jordan have raised doubts over the helpfulness of protests from Manchester United fans ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Monday night.

The 1958 and Manchester United Supporters' Trust are staging a protest against the Glazer family's ownership outside Old Trafford, as discontent among fans reaches new heights after a catastrophic start to the season.

Following an underwhelming summer of transfer business, the Red Devils opened the new campaign under Erik ten Hag with a 2-1 defeat to Brighton and a 4-0 thrashing by Brentford.

The Glazers have been unpopular at Old Trafford ever since taking control with £500million of debt in 2005 and supporters want the Americans gone amid a steady decline on the pitch since 2013.

Britain's richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe has emerged as a genuine prospective buyer and fans will make their feelings towards the Glazers known on Monday night.

talkSPORT understands up to 10,000 fans could march from the Tollgate pub to Old Trafford before kick-off and #EmptyOldTrafford is trending on Twitter as some supporters plan on boycotting the match.

In May 2021, the same fixture was abandoned when disgruntled United fans stormed the behind-closed-doors clash and got it postponed.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists the Premier League should hand his side three points if that happens again, while Reds legend Souness insists the protest will only hurt United's players and hand an advantage to the visitors.

"The Man United players will be distracted by it," Souness told talkSPORT.

"The Liverpool players will want more of it because they're just there to play football.

"I was there when the supporters broke into the stadium. Liverpool will benefit from it, the Man United players won't.

"They have to keep that in mind. The job is hard enough for the Man United players right now."

Meanwhile, ex-Crystal Palace owner Jordan insists nothing will come of the protests besides more pain for United on the pitch.

Jordan told talkSPORT: "I don't really care. I don't think there's anything constructive about what they're doing.

"Everyone knows what their view is. Their team is in disarray.

"It will suit their narrative. There will actually be an irony if they get spanked tonight by Liverpool - because it will increase the pressure and increase the exasperation and carry on this situation.

"Man United, as a football team, need to be better. Man United, as an ownership, need to be better.

"Ten thousand people protesting outside the stadium, being rabble-roused by Gary Neville, doesn't help."
