West Ham finally get first win of season with lucky Pablo Fornals goal against Aston Villa as Philippe Coutinho limps off clutching his hamstring and Steven Gerrard’s side booed off

It has been a long wait, but West Ham finally got off the mark this season with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

The Hammers had been rock bottom of the Premier League and were the only team yet to even score a goal.

Pablo Fornals changed that when he hit the only goal of the game at Villa Park after his shot took a huge deflection... but David Moyes will not care.

Moyes had some big decisions to make ahead of the game and decided to hand a start to new striker Gianluca Scamacca, with fan favourite Michail Antonio benched.

Villa thought they had taken a first half lead when Ezri Konsa had the ball in the back of the net from a corner.

The eagle-eyed assistant referee had spotted the corner went out of play before coming back in just before the defender fired home.

That was the biggest talking point of the first half, and that was summed up by the expected goals for both teams with Villa's 0.15 slightly ahead of the Hammers' 0.01.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first with both sides scrapping like two teams out of form.

There was a worry for Steven Gerrard as Philippe Coutinho, who struggled in the match, went off clutching his hamstring.

The deadlock was finally broken when Fornals' shot deflected off Konsa and looped over Emi Martinez to break the deadlock with 16 minutes left.

The Aston Villa fans were not happy at full-time after the match ended 1-0, booing their players off the pitch.

West Ham climbed off the foot of the table, joining Villa on three points and a goal difference of -4.
