‘He’s a STRIKER!’ Harry Redknapp unconvinced by Harry Kane’s new number ten role at Tottenham

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is unconvinced by Spurs’ experiment to play Harry Kane as a number ten, insisting the England international plays at his best as an out-and-out striker.

Kane has been Tottenham’s top scorer for the last two seasons and was also the Premier League’s most prolific frontman last term with 25 goals, yet he was given a different role for Saturday’s win over Crystal Palace.

The 23-year-old played in a deeper position in the Spurs attack, behind £17million summer signing Vincent Janssen, but the experiment did not bare fruit, with both men drawing blanks in front of goal.

Having played Kane as a lone hitman over the past few seasons, Mauricio Pochettino was keen to give Kane support this term and landed Janssen as a result, and it seems only natural that he try and fit both men into his side.

But Redknapp believes Kane is most effective at the spearhead of Tottenham’s attacking line.

“I see him playing up front,” the former Spurs boss told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“Maybe Pochettino just fancied a change, but I think most of the season we’ll see Harry playing as a number nine.”

Tottenham also suffered from a lack of creativity against Palace, but the introduction of Dele Alli from the bench, replacing an out-of-sorts Christian Eriksen, instantly made the difference.

The change also allowed Kane to push further forward, and Redknapp believes the England duo are Spurs' best pairing up front.

He added: “I don’t know why Dele Alli didn’t play on Saturday, but for me they’re the partnership - Harry Kane at number nine and Dele Alli playing in behind him as a ten.

“I think they’re two fantastic young players.”
