EFL Cup review: Gillingham shock winners at Watford, Northampton beat West Brom, Liverpool ease past Burton and MORE

Walter Mazzarri’s Watford and Tony Pulis' West Brom were the biggest casualties of the second round of the EFL Cup.

The Hornets lost 2-1 to League One Gillingham at Vicarage Road. The Gills were hammered 5-0 by Scunthorpe at the weekend but they bounced back to take the Hornets to extra-time as Bradley Dack's goal on 102 minutes gave Justin Edinburgh's side the shock victory.

Meanwhile the Baggies were beaten by Rob Page's Cobblers, also of League One, on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

And elsewhere, Derby and Carlisle took part in a 32-penalty shootout, with Nigel Pearson’s Rams coming out on top (14-13) at the iPro following a 1-1 draw.

Liverpool bounced back from their weekend defeat at Burnley to hammer Nigel Clough’s Burton 5-0.

Daniel Sturridge scored twice in five second-half minutes at the Pirelli Stadium, while Divock Origi, Roberto Firmino and Tom Naylor (own goal) were also on the score sheet against the Championship side.

Chelsea held off to prevent a comeback by Bristol Rovers as Antonio Conte’s men won 3-2 at Stamford Bridge.

Michy Batshuayi scored a first-half double on his first start since joining the club from Marseille, while Victor Moses also hit the back of the net. Ellis Harrison made it nervy for the Blues when he made it two for the visitors with a penalty early in the second half.

Managerless Hull City came from behind to win 3-1 at Exeter City.

Jake Taylor put Paul Tisdale’s side ahead before Adama Diomande pulled two back, then Robert Snodgrass made it three.

Ronald Koeman’s Everton cruised to a 4-0 victory over Yeovil at Goodison Park.

New signings Yanick Bolasie and Ashley Williams started, along with Romelu Lukaku, as Arouna Kone netted twice, along with the Toffees' captain on the night Ross Barkley.

Swansea overcame a tricky tie at Peterborough to win 3-1, as young Ollie McBurnie netted twice for the Premier League side.

Peter Crouch scored a hat-trick in Stoke City’s 4-0 win at Stevenage and Championship side Wolves avoided defeat against Cambridge with a 2-1 victory at Molineux.

Scott Dann and Connor Wickham were on the score sheet as Crystal Palace avoided an upset with a 2-0 victory over Blackpool.

Christian Benteke made his debut after joining from Liverpool in a potential £32million deal.

Garry Monk made 11 changes to his Leeds side and his faith was repaid as the Championship side won 1-0 at Luton Town. Young full-back Tyler Denton scored a brilliant goal on his debut at Kenilworth Road.

Norwich City hammered League One side Coventry 6-1, Brighton won 4-2 at Oxford United, Preston beat Oldham 2-0 while QPR were 2-1 winners against Rochdale.

Elsewhere, Championship sides Newcastle and Nottingham booked their place in round three, beating Cheltenham and Millwall respectively. 

In the other matches that went to extra-time, Owen Coyle’s Blackburn beat Crewe 4-3 and Scunthorpe lost at home to Bristol City 2-1.

MK Dons scored deep into extra-time to take Jaap Stam’s Reading to penalties following a 2-2 scoreline. The Royals won 4-2 on penalties.
