Steven Gerrard's fate may have been sealed as his Aston Villa side were beaten 3-0 by Fulham on Thursday night.

Gerrard was already fighting to save his job, but the performance at Craven Cottage would only have further increased worries that he is not the man to turn it around.

Fulham had been threatening to score since the start of the game and had dominated the possession and chances since kick-off, yet they had to wait until the 36th minute to find the breakthrough.

Villa were unable to successfully clear from a corner and the ball fell to Harrison Reed at the edge of the box. The midfielder made no mistake, taking a touch before firing the ball past Emiliano Martinez into the net.

Matters got worse for Villa and manager Steven Gerrard in the 63rd minute when Douglas Luiz was controversially sent off following a VAR review for headbutting Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The players had squared up with some minor contact between them, but the Villa player was shown a red card for the altercation.

The result was sealed when a penalty was awarded to Fulham following a handball by Matty Cash.

Mitrovic's penalty was weak, but slid under the diving Martinez to make it 2-0.

As the goal went in there were loud cheers of 'we want Gerrard out' coming from the away end.

To pile on the misery Fulham added a third late on when Tyrone Mings turned the ball into his own net.

Villa remain in 17th place, with the same points and goal difference as third from bottom Wolves.

The midlands club are due to face Brentford on Sunday, but it remains to be seen if Gerrard will still be the manager.
