Tim Sherwood has told Mauricio Pochettino there’s ‘no bigger club out there’ for him than Aston Villa right now - but it's understood he is not interested in succeeding Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard was sacked as Villa boss after less than a year in charge on Thursday night, departing after a humbling 3-0 defeat away to Fulham.

The Liverpool and England legend leaves the side with two wins and six defeats in 11 Premier League games this season, despite investing the majority of the English record £100million fee that Manchester City paid for Jack Grealish.

That leaves an attractive vacancy in the Midlands, with Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Sporting coach Ruben Amorim among the early favourites with bookmakers

However, Sherwood thinks Pochettino and Villa would be an ideal match and hopes the former Tottenham boss will seriously consider it after his difficult spell with Paris Saint-Germain.

He told talkSPORT: “I think that's who's out there, who's on the market. I mean, the top of the list has to be Pochettino with his style of play and what he's done at Tottenham.

“He built Tottenham as well, didn't he? I mean, he took Tottenham to the Champions League regularly. He's a very good manager, likes to work with younger players.

“Their academy at Villa is very, very good. If they can prise Poch to that football club then I think [they should] do.

“I don't think if Pochettino goes in there he will be doing Aston Villa a favour, not by any means.

“Like I mentioned before, this is a huge football club, what clubs are out there for Pochettino at the moment?

“I'm not sure there's a bigger club than Aston Villa out there for him, so I think it's a wonderful opportunity for him to come back.”
