Burnley boss Vincent Kompany delivered a hilarious response when asked if he'd sign Cristiano Ronaldo, saying: "We need players who can run!"

On Tuesday, Manchester United confirmed the player had been allowed to leave the club by mutual consent following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

During the 90-minute chat, the 37-year-old took aim at Manchester United owners the Glazers, head coach Erik ten Hag, the players and club legends Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville in a series of astonishing claims.

Confirming Ronaldo's future, a United statement read: “Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.

“The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.

“Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”

Ronaldo's future is a big topic of conversation in the football world and Manchester City legend Kompany was asked - tongue-in-cheek - if he'd take him at Turf Moor.

His response, delivered while smiling, brought laughs, but Kompany did add he reckons nobody, except Ten Hag, emerges from the situation victorious.

“I think that in the end everybody loses, except perhaps the Manchester United manager.

“I think it’s a problem that’s resolved and they’ll move on from this, I’m sure.”

Burnley are top of the Championship, while Ronaldo, is in Qatar trying to win a first World Cup for his country.

It's unclear where he will go next, with former club Sporting as well as Premier League side Chelsea mentioned as possible destinations.

Ronaldo's former teammate Rio Ferdinand agreed with Kompany, saying: "Ten Hag has got what he wanted. Both parties are happy. Move on. Next chapter for Cristiano Ronaldo.”
