Australia vs Denmark LIVE commentary: Socceroos aim to pull off shock upset and reach World Cup last 16 for first time since 2006 – date, kick-off time and how to listen on talkSPORT

Australia can qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time since 2006 when they face Denmark in their final group game.

The Socceroos beat Tunisia last time out and can prevail against all the odds to make it through to the knockout stages if they avoid defeat.

If Graham Arnold’s side win, they will progress, and even a point could send them through if France beat or draw to Tunisia.

It would be a huge achievement for the country to finish above Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark, after only ever winning three games at the World Cup.

For the Danes, they have to win this game to avoid a shock exit and leapfrog their opponents to move through to the knockout rounds.

Australia vs Denmark: Match facts

  • Mitchell Duke has scored five goals in his last eight starts for Australia in all competitions, with four of these goals being headers.
  • Christian Eriksen has created seven chances at the 2022 World Cup, at least five more than any other player for Denmark. Indeed, France’s Antoine Griezmann (9) is the only midfielder or forward who has created more in Group D in the tournament so far.
  • Nine of Australia's 15 World Cup goals have been scored by players aged 30 and over, including their two goals so far at this tournament (Craig Goodwin and Mitchell Duke). It's the highest percentage of goals netted by players aged 30+ in the competition's history (60%, minimum 2 goals scored excluding own goals).
  • Australia have won just three of their 18 World Cup matches (D4 L11), beating Japan in 2006, Serbia in 2010 and Tunisia this year. The Socceroos have also kept just two clean sheets in these 18 games, a 0-0 draw with Chile in 1974, and their 1-0 win against Tunisia last time out.
  • Denmark could qualify for the knockout stages at back-to-back World Cup tournaments for a second time, previously doing so in 1998 and 2002. In fact, they have only failed to qualify from the group stage in one of their previous five appearances at the World Cup prior to 2022 (eliminated in the group stage in 2010).
  • Australia are looking to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup for only a second time in their six participations in the finals, having only previously done so in 2006.
  • Denmark are winless in their last five World Cup games (D4 L1), since beating Peru on MD1 of the 2018 tournament. Following their defeat to France, they could lose back-to-back group stage matches at the tournament for the first time.
  • Australia have lost eight of their 11 World Cup games against European sides (W1 D2), failing to keep a clean sheet in all 11 matches. However, one of the three times they avoided defeat was against Denmark (1-1 in 2018).
  • Australia have won just one of their four meetings with Denmark in all competitions (D1 L2), winning a friendly match 1-0 in June 2010.
  • This is the second meeting between Australia and Denmark at the FIFA World Cup, following a 1-1 draw in the group stage of the competition last time out in 2018.
