Kylian Mbappe surpasses Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane as France star tipped for future Ballon d’Or after wowing in World Cup win over Poland

Kylian Mbappe has gone ahead of footballing legend Cristiano Ronaldo for goals scored at the World Cup thanks to his brace against Poland.

The 23-year-old netted twice for Les Bleus in the Round of 16 clash, with the Paris Saint-Germain adding to his ever-growing goal tally once again.

With just over 15 minutes left to play, Mbappe fired a powerful shot down the middle of the goal and into the roof of the net to double France's lead.

He then added a third towards the end, this time curling a wonderful effort into the top-right corner.

The youngster now has five for the tournament so far and nine in total during his time at World Cups, which sees him go ahead of Ronaldo's haul of eight, having done it in 11 games, nine fewer than the Portuguese superstar.

Mbappe is also the first ever Frenchman to score four or more goals at different tournaments, with the forward competing at only his second World Cup.

Thanks to his efforts against Poland, he is now level with the likes of Lionel Messi and David Villa, and one behind Gary Lineker and Thomas Muller.

Mbappe's first goal of the match also saw him overtake French football icon Zinedine Zidane for goals with the national team. Zidane scored 31 goals for France over a 12-year period, while Mbappe now has 33.

"He is world-class, you can see that. He is a future Ballon d'Or winner… if you're a defender coming up against him you just hope he has an off-day," former England international Lianne Sanderson said on commentary for talkSPORT 2.

Mbappe was also on hand to assist Olivier Giroud for their first goal, with the latter's finish seeing him surpass Thierry Henry and become France's all time top scorer with 52 goals.

It was relatively easy for them against Poland, with the two-time winners now into the last-eight.

Robert Lewandowski scored a consolation penalty for the losing side to put him on two goals at the World Cup.

However, it is the French who through, and they will now play the winner of England vs Senegal.
