Ally McCoist makes cheeky ‘over the line’ joke as Kylian Mbappe joins England legend Sir Geoff Hurst by scoring World Cup final hat-trick in France’s defeat to Argentina

Ally McCoist couldn't help but make a cheeky joke at England's expense as Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick in Sunday's World Cup final.

Mbappe became the first male player since Sir Geoff Hurst in 1966 to net a trio of goals as he struck three times in France's penalty shootout defeat to Argentina.

The Paris Saint-Germain star scored two penalties and a stunning first-time volley to force the tie to go to a shoot-out, but it ultimately was not enough as Argentina claimed their third World Cup.

talkSPORT's McCoist was cheeky with his comments as he watched the game on commentary duty for ITV.

The Rangers and Scotland legend said: "Mbappe is the first player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final when every one was over the line!"

Of course, referring to Hurst’s controversial goal from 1966, which is often a topic of debate as to whether it crossed the line or not.

Hurst himself was gracious in having a male player finally join him in the illustrious - and very short - list of World Cup final hat-trick heroes, 56 years after England's triumph 56 years ago.

He tweeted out during the game, before it went to penalties: “Many congratulations to Mbappe, whatever happens. I’ve had a great run!”

Mbappe had a brilliant World Cup and, despite being on the losing side, his eight goals led to him winning the tournament’s Golden Boot.

It was the most goals by a player in a single World Cup since 2002, when Brazil’s Ronaldo managed the same number on his way to tournament glory in Korea/Japan that year.

Mbappe also became the youngest player to reach ten World Cup goals and is already level with Pele’s tally of 12 overall, with the all-time record of 16 in sight.

And he's only 23! You can be sure there is more to come.
