Newcastle recall Martin Dubravka from top four rivals Manchester United just four months into a season-long loan deal

Martin Dubravka has been recalled by Newcastle United from his season-long loan at Manchester United.

The Slovakian has made just two appearances since arriving at Old Trafford in the summer but will now return to Tyneside.

United paid Newcastle £2 million to loan Dubravka and had an option to sign him on a permanent deal for £6m if he made a certain number of appearances.

A statement by Manchester United read: "Martin Dubravka has been recalled from his season-long loan to Manchester United by his parent club Newcastle United.

"The Slovakian goalkeeper has made two appearances for the Reds since arriving from Tyneside in the summer, both in the Carabao Cup.

"We would like to thank Martin for his contribution during his time with our club, and wish him all the best for the future."

It is believed that the Magpies made the decision to call time on Dubravka’s spell in Manchester with the club confirming he will return to the club to provide competition for Nick Pope.

Pope has become the club’s undoubted number one following his switch from Burnley in the summer.

The England international has kept nine clean sheets this season – the most in the Premier League – and dislodging the 30-year-old might prove a difficult task.

Newcastle have a host of shot-stoppers at their disposal with Karl Darlow deputising for Pope, while former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius was drafted in on a short-term deal that is due to expire later this month.

The Magpies ended 2022 with a goalless draw at home to Leeds to cement their third-placed position.

Eddie Howe’s side will be hoping they can quickly return to winning ways but face a tough trip to runaway leaders Arsenal on Tuesday evening before a trip to Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup next weekend.
