Jack Butland to Manchester United confirmed by Erik ten Hag as Red Devils move for goalkeeper following Martin Dubravka’s return to Newcastle

Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Jack Butland is set to join Manchester United as they look for an experienced option between the sticks.

talkSPORT understands that the Red Devils have completed the loan signing of goalkeeper from Crystal Palace, with just a formal announcement yet to be made.

Erik ten Hag needed cover for David de Gea after Martin Dubravka's exit from Old Trafford, with the stopper now back with Newcastle.

United did consider the option of bringing back Dean Henderson from his loan at Nottingham Forest, but they have now moved to bring in Butland as back-up.

Explaining the move, Ten Hag said: "Martin was recalled and in our set-up we need a squad with three experienced goalkeepers.

"We have some young ones and they do well but we have so many games so you need three good goalies in training and you need experience in the goal to get what you are aiming for.

"What is (Butland) bringing? I'm really happy with David, it's quite clear he's our number one. He's a really good performer. But something can happen with David as well.

"You have to prepared for that and not be in such a moment where you have only one experienced (goalkeeper), you can be unlucky."

The 29-year-old signed for Palace from Stoke in October 2020 but has made limited appearances for the Eagles.

He has featured just 17 times over two seasons, keeping a total of three clean sheets.

Butland is yet to make an appearance this season, but he has been sidelined with a fractured finger for most of it.

The Old Trafford loan deal runs until the end of the season, when his contract at Selhurst Park expires.

Butland spoke to talkSPORT back in 2017 when he was at Stoke and hinted that he would like to play for a club such as United.

He was part of the England squad at the 2018 World Cup but his career has stalled somewhat since.

“My ambitions are to be the Stoke number one and England number one, but there are other things I want to achieve in my career as well," he said five years ago.

“I want to play in the Champions League and I want to win trophies. There’s no reason why we can’t win trophies at Stoke, we’ll try and win some cups and do as well as we can, but I obviously have ambitions.

“If it’s the right move at the right time, you never know. You always have to think about these things.

“A club like Manchester United, or whoever it may be… United are, for me, the biggest club in the world and you have to take those things in consideration.

“But if it’s right, if it’s not, I’ll make those decisions at the time."
