‘I’d do it’ – Danny Murphy slams VAR officials and says ‘I’m more intelligent than any of them’ following controversial disallowed goal in Wolves’ FA Cup clash with Liverpool

Danny Murphy has claimed he would be a better Video Assistant Referee than 'any of the people doing it now'.

The former Liverpool star was discussing the system on talkSPORT after Wolves were left aggrieved when they had a late winner disallowed in their FA Cup clash with the Reds.

Toti Gomes found the back of the net but was ruled to be offside, despite their being no evidence to support the decision.

As a result the third round clash is set to be replayed on January 17, a fixture that could have been avoided for Julen Lopetegui's side.

Speaking of the decision after the match, the Wolves boss said: "We have seen it, the offside doesn't exist, I'm sorry. It's impossible.

"Someone has told him it's offside, but we've seen the images, it doesn't exist.

"The decision is wrong. I make mistakes every day, and sometimes they do too. Today we have the help of VAR, and it is a pity, because I'm sorry, it's not offside."

After seeing the decision, Murphy was scathing in the current VAR setup at St Georges' Park and said he is 'more intelligent' and 'better at watching football' than the current video refs.

Asked by talkSPORT host Jim White if former players should be involved, Murphy said: “I think it would help, but I don’t think it would be a fix. I don’t think that there is a complete fix.

“I’d do it. I would be better at VAR than any of the people doing it now. Any of them.

“Because I’ve watched and played more football than any of them. There’s not one VAR official who has watched more football than me because I watch football non-stop and I’m more intelligent and better at watching football than those guys doing it.

“Some of the decisions they’ve made this season, my 12-year-old would be better than some of the decisions I’ve seen this season."

Asked by White if he wants to see goals that shouldn’t have been given, Murphy responded: “Yeah, if it creates better euphoria and a better spectacle and a better feeling among the fans.

“If it makes everybody more content, then yeah.

“If it creates a memorable moment for a seven-year-old with his dad that he’ll never forget rather than having it taken away because someone’s armpit is offside, then hell yes.”
