Kai Havertz was the match winner, heading home in the 64th minute to lift some of the gloom that has shrouded Stamford Bridge in recent weeks.

Potter was able to breathe a sigh of relief and revealed he was happy for his ‘suffering’ players after a run of poor form.

“It was an emotional day because of the tributes to Gianluca [Vialli], then obviously to get the three points is valuable to us when you consider the moment we've been in,” said Potter after the game.

“I thought it was a very important three points against a team with very dangerous players.

“Fantastic header from Kai, well worked from a set piece and we attacked quite well. We missed the final pass to get into better situations but overall you can see they’ve given everything.”

Potter continued: “ I don’t expect champagne football that’s for sure but nice to get the three points and delighted for the players.

“They’ve suffered, they’ve suffered as a team . They’ve stuck together, we’ve been together as a group and it’s nice them to get their rewards.”

Chelsea unveiled new £88million signing Mykhailo Mudyrk to the crowd at Stamford Bridge and Potter admitted he’s excited to work with the highly-rated Ukrainian winger.

Potter said: “We’re delighted that he’s here. I have no idea how it happened, I've been focusing on the game as you can imagine. He’s an exciting player, a player with real quality.

“A young player that’s going to need some time to adapt to the Premier League but we’re excited to have him.”
