Silva has proven to be a crucial asset in their backline ever since, performing at the highest level despite his age.

Fellow centre-backs Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile have all signed for Chelsea since the summer.

However, despite the arrivals of fresh talent, Silva has revealed that he is looking to stay at Stamford Bridge to help with the club's rebuild.

Speaking to , the Brazil veteran said: "We are talking about it, everything will probably happen in the next few days.

"My intention, and that of the club as well, is to stay together. I know that the club needs me right now. I am here to be able to help, they are young players, anyway.

"I know that, with my experience, I can help in this process of rebuilding the club, I'm here for that, willing to do this, however, I know that my responsibility is very great."

Should Silva sign a new deal, it would be his third extension at Chelsea following his arrival nearly three years ago.

The Blues are set to undergo a rebuild under Graham Potter, with the west London outfit being heavily active in the January transfer window.

Chelsea signed eight new players last month, spending close to £300million on fresh signings.

One of those was Enzo Fernandez, who has joined from Benfica in a British record deal of £106.8million.

All of their January arrivals are aged 23 or younger, which suggests they are building a side for the future.

Change may not be instant, but improvement is certainly required as Potter's side sit tenth in the Premier League table.
