Brennan Johnson joins Manchester United and Man City stars Bruno Fernandes and Riyad Mahrez for most goal involvements in 2023, as Nottingham Forest ace nets stunning winner against Leeds

Brennan Johnson has joined an exclusive club in the Premier League after his stunning winner against Leeds on Sunday.

The Nottingham Forest ace has played a huge role in his side's revival following the 2022 World Cup, and he's now level with two of the league's best stars when it comes to goal contributions in 2023 as a result.

Since the turn of the year, Johnson has now netted three goals, as well as recording two assists in that time, contributing in all of his side's last four games.

Those stats put him level with Manchester City's Riyad Mahrez and Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes - who have also scored three goals and made two assists each - for the most goal contributions in 2023.

He's also been involved in each of Nottingham Forest's last five Premier League goals.

That's quite something for a 21-year-old who has only started playing top flight football this season.

The Forest forward was in the right place at the right time when he netted to put his team 1-0 up against Leeds in the 14th minute on Sunday.

Morgan Gibbs-White swung the ball in from a free-kick from the right, evading everyone huddled in the middle and leaving it to bounce out towards Johnson who was waiting on the edge of the area.

As the ball fell to him, the youngster timed his shot perfectly, hitting the ball on the volley and sending it flying into Leeds' goal.

He also became just the third played aged 21 or under to hit the five Premier League goal mark this season - joining Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli (both on seven).

In truth, Johnson's strike was the only real moment of quality in the game.

Patrick Bamford missed a glorious chance to equalise after a poor first touch when trying to get on the end of Wilfried Gnonto's through ball, whilst Keylor Navas made a number of fine saves to keep his side in the lead.

That goal proved to be enough to win it for Forest, who climb up to 13th place.
