Paul Scholes says Bruno Fernandes is now doing for others what Wayne Rooney did for Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United

Paul Scholes has hailed Bruno Fernandes, saying he is now doing for others what Wayne Rooney did for Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United.

The Portuguese star, who has been captain of the side while Harry Maguire has been dropped, has been playing in a variety of positions, often away from his best, to accommodate other players in the attacking line.

Fernandes is normally known to play just behind the forward but has had a stellar run of form in recent weeks playing out wide on the right.

This has allowed other players such as Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho to do well - something that has been recognised by Scholes.

The Manchester United legend believes it’s something the best players have to do, including Old Trafford icon Rooney who changed up his game to help Ronaldo to shine in their glory days under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Speaking on BT Sport after United’s win against Barcelona, Scholes said: “Bruno will sacrifice himself to play out there. Sancho played a little different position but he wants to play in the wide spaces. Sacrifice is what it’s all about. 

“He’s like Wayne Rooney, he did it so many times to accommodate Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Just bringing that anticipation and quality to the team that Bruno has - wherever he plays on the team, he is capable of creating a goal.”

Ronaldo was the face of the club in that time, as he was a frequent goalscorer, eventually being named the world’s best player in 2008 as he spurred Manchester United on to a Champions League win.

Over the last year, Fernandes’ goalscoring output has decreased from when he first joined, as players like Rashford have taken up the responsibility and have delivered.

Still, Fernandes is proving to be a huge creator of chances and it’s something valuable to Manchester United as they enjoy a resurgence under Erik ten Hag.
