Suarez and Aguero? 11 PL attackers more wasteful than Danny Welbeck

Joint 8th. Daniel Sturridge, Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, Nikica Jelavic have all missed nine 'big chances’ in the 13/14 PL season* – Click the arrow for more

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has been warned off trying to chip the goalkeeper in future, after he squandered a golden opportunity to put his side ahead against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

Having squirmed away from the Bayern defence, Welbeck was one-on-one with Manuel Neuer, but instead of slotting it past the on-rushing goalkeeper, he opted to try and lift the ball over, wasting a chance which could have proved costly for the Red Devils. Fortunately they emerged with a 1-1 draw against the European champions, but the result could well have been different had he took the more traditional route to goal.

Welbeck has a tendency to go for the spectacular, even if he rarely finds the net doing so, but perhaps surprisingly to some, he isn’t the Premier League’s most wasteful marksman, as can be seen above.

We asked our friends at Opta who were the top-flight’s most wasteful players, when it came to squandering ‘big chances’. Naturally, the term is subjective, but in the list above, it includes any chance deemed by the boffins at Opta where a player should at least hit the target.
