Premier League title dreams will not distract Liverpool, insists Gerrard

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard admits he has dreamt of the Reds finally being crowned Premier League champions this season, but insists the carrot of the coveted trophy will not distract him and his team-mates in their title run-in.

An impressive 13-game unbeaten league run has seen the Redmen rocket to the summit of the top flight table, with their last defeat coming in December against rivals Chelsea, who are only two points behind in second place.

With Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup winners medals already round his neck, the Premier League is the only club honour 33-year-old Gerrard is yet to claim, and anticipation is growing on Merseyside with just six games remaining.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers and his players have consistently downplayed their title chances in recent weeks, but even the experienced skipper is struggling to keep his dreams of league glory under wraps.

"I think I'd be a liar if I said I haven’t thought about it,” Gerrard said.

"It is flashing in and out of my mind from time to time, but I am trying to get it out as quick as it is going in because nothing has been achieved yet.

"It is important for myself and the players to try to not forget about the dream but try to park it up, as dreams only happen when you get the job done and there are six hard matches still to play."

Liverpool have undergone a extreme transformation under Rodgers’ stewardship, with the Reds carrying over their positive finish to the previous season into this year’s campaign.

The Anfield outfit have netted 88 goals in the league alone this season, with the flourishing strike partnership of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge contributing to over half of their tally with 49 strikes between them.

Suarez and Sturridge's prolificacy has, deservedly, stolen the headlines but Gerrard, who says the team are “on another level” now compared to previous seasons, insists the whole squad deserves credit for their dazzling form.

He added: "We have an unbelievable mentality, winning attitude, and we always know if we work hard for each other and do the ugly bits which players don't like doing all the time, we know the nice stuff will come out.

"We have been playing at a pace which is difficult for opposition teams to cope with, but it all starts with sticking together.

"It is the manager's way. Everyone has taken it on board and put it into practice.

"I remember us finishing the last six months of last season very consistently and we took that into this year. We had a good pre-season and from day one the form has been consistent, but of late we've taken it to another level.

"The run we are on is superb and it is a credit to everyone in the squad."
