Manchester United fans joked Scott McTominay should start up front over Wout Weghorst.

And it is not difficult to see why after a brilliant stint with Scotland over the international break, scoring four times in two games.

McTominay's first double came against Cyprus in a 3-0 win over the European minnows on Saturday night.

The United star came off the bench to net a late duo, the first in the 87th minute and second in the 93rd minute, to make it a comfortable win for the Tartan Army.

But the best was yet to come when Scotland took on Spain at Hampden Park on Tuesday night with no one giving Steve Clarke's side any hope.

And they made their doubters eat their words when McTominay was at it again, scoring a gorgeous double including a well-struck volley past Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga to send Scottish fans into a frenzy.

With United struggling for a reliable goalscorer, it did not take some fans to joke about sticking the midfielder up top in place of the misfiring Weghorst.

One fan wrote: "Id rather have mctominay up top than weghorst."

Another posted: "We have a whole squad full of midfielders that would make better strikers than Weghorst."

And this fan replied: "He'd cook in weghorsts role which is literally just work hard and have a s*** ton of chances come your way.

"Unlike weghorst, mctominay would bag a few of those chances.

With this supporter saying: "What if… ETH converts him into a world-class striker."

While a fifth tweeted: "Scott McTominay as striker ahead of Weghorst for the rest of the season then…"

While some United fans might want McTominay up front, his services might be needed in midfield where Casemiro is suspended and Marcel Sabitzer has potentially picked up an injury.

Indeed, Weghorst remains a toiling force in front of goal for the Reds Devils after just scoring twice throughout his spell at Old Trafford since arriving on loan in January.

His struggles have even translated to the national side as he failed to score in the 3-0 win over Gibraltar - even though the Netherlands had 51 shots.

McTominay, meanwhile, has netted double that in the matter of days with Scotland while some strikes in his past in United colours have often left many fans stunned.

Goals against Leeds, Manchester City and Arsenal in recent times have been absolute blockbusters.

But it might be no surprise to youth coaches at United, where he began as a striker before Jose Mourinho molded him into a midfielder.
