Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has resigned as manager of PSV Eindhoven.

The decision has been made with immediate effect, despite winning a cup double.

The former Red Devil had lifted the KNVB Cup this season, as well as the Johann Cruyff Shield at the start of the campaign.

But turmoil behind the scenes has led to the shock departure.

According to , some PSV players had grown unhappy with the style of management.

And the coach was left frustrated by the club's transfer business in January, that saw two key players depart.

Cody Gakpo signed for Liverpool while Noni Madueke joined Chelsea, leaving their attack decimated.

Fred Rutten will take charge for the final match of the season with PSV set to face AZ Alkmaar this weekend.

The Rood-witten defeated Ajax in the KNVB Cup final in April, winning on penalties to lift the trophy.

It saw them reclaim the cup that they won last year, which earned them the right to play in the Johan Cruyff Shield - the equivalent to the Community Shield in England.

They faced Ajax, who won the Eredivisie last season but lost Erik ten Hag, while PSV started the campaign with a bang with a 5-3 victory.

But Van Nistelrooy will now be looking for a new job after resigning before the season had even finished in what was his first campaign of a senior side.

The Dutchman is a legend at Old Trafford, where he played for five years and etched his name as one of their best strikers in the Premier League era.

In 219 appearances, the former striker scored an impressive 150 goals, before moving to Real Madrid, Hamburg and then Malaga.
