World Cup winner Messi is expected to be officially unveiled as MLS' highest-profile player in the near future once the finer details are finalised.

And on his 36th birthday, Inter Miami co-owner Beckham sent the Barcelona legend two messages on his .

The first picture Beckham uploaded was of the pair shaking hands in 2009 ahead of LA Galaxy's friendly against the Blaugrana at The Rose Bowl.

Captioning the post, the Manchester United icon said: "Here we go my friend. Happy birthday."

Beckham followed that up with another upload, this time showing Messi lifting the World Cup trophy after Argentina's penalty shootout victory over France in December.

This time he remarked: "Happy birthday my friend. Special year ahead."

Messi is currently in Argentina where he has been spotted enjoying a peaceful bike ride in his hometown of Rosario.

His attention will slowly turn to his new adventure Stateside - despite the forward declaring he has nothing left to achieve in football.

He stated: "Does the Ballon d'Or matter to me? No, it's no longer important to me.

"I've always said; the individual prizes are not what matters to me.

"The collective ones are the most important. The most important prize at the moment is the World Cup, the greatest prize for me [2022] was my last World Cup.

"I will see how things go, but in principle, no, I will not go to the next World Cup.

"I have achieved everything in football. There is nothing left."
