Kai Havertz went from hero to zero in the MLS All-Star Skill Challenge as he failed to get going in the cross and volley drill.

The 24-year-old had just fired the Gunners into a 2-0 lead over their MLS counterparts with a dazzling performance in the touch challenge to show the class that persuaded Arsenal to shell out big on him.

But the £65million signing from Chelsea was guilty of fluffing his lines in the next event, where he created history by failing to score a single goal - the first time that has happened in this drill since its revamp in 2018.

In this challenge, the shooter receives passes from two of his teammates, where he can decide to take a touch and shoot, or hit a first-time volley for extra points.

Havertz was first up for Arsenal, where he was given 60 seconds to try and better Christian Benteke's tally of 30.

However, to say he struggled would be an understatement, as he barely threatened goalkeeper Roman Burki.

His last strike on the buzzer smashed against the post. However, it's important to remember it's a pre-season game and Havertz seemed to be enjoying himself as he walked away with a wry smile - a reflection of the fun players seemed to be having.

Folarin Balogun was next up for Arsenal - scoring three goals - but it wasn't enough, as Denis Bouanga's 95-point tally secured the win for the MLS team.

Fans on social media, though, took the challenge a little too seriously and some seemed to think it was a reflection on what was to come in the Premier League season. One Arsenal supporter tweeted: "Please put Havertz in midfield."

Another posted: "Havertz was awful in that challenge."

A third added: "Arteta better watch this. Havertz is no striker."

This user joked: "We want our money back from Chelsea."

Meanwhile, one fan simply stated: "We are in trouble."

Another said: "Keep Havertz away from the box!"

Havertz, who is in line to start against the MLS All-Stars on Thursday, will be hoping to make those with something to say about this look foolish as he is in line to start.

And he will be breathing a huge sigh of relief that Arsenal ended up winning the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge, with Auston Trusty proving to be the unlikely hero.
