The 2023/24 Premier League season has seen a number of rule changes introduced with a particular focus on time-wasting.

The new top-flight campaign is into only its second weekend with Wolves taking on Brighton - exclusively LIVE on talkSPORT.

As ever, the powers that be have updated the rules and regulations around the game ahead of the first ball being kicked.

Here, marvelbet369.com runs down the new guidelines for the Premier League.

Added time

The Premier League are taking their cue from the 2022 World Cup after stats showed the ball was only in play around 55 minutes on average in top-flight games last term.

Referees will now be obliged to specifically time interruptions before restarts after a goal, a substitution, injury, or set-piece.

More time will also be added on for goal celebrations that officials believe have become increasingly lengthier.

As a result, the Premier League can expect matches to be as long as they were in Qatar.

England's 6-2 win over Iran memorably had 24 minutes of added time due to the eight goals and 10 substitutions plus an additional two concussion-related injuries in normal time.

Referees will also look to clamp down on penalising 'clear and impactful actions' of time-wasting that is not just kicking the ball away.

New rules for participant and fan behaviour

  • A new technical area code of conduct and increased financial penalties for repeat offenders
  • Academy scholars to undertake refereeing courses to improve their education into officiating
  • Stadium bans and potential criminal prosecution for tragedy abuse
  • A pilot scheme to rehabilitate young offenders to educate them about impact of their behaviour on others
  • A three-point plan to tackle unwanted spectator and participant behaviour across steps 5 and 6 of the National League

Foul leniency

Referee guidelines around what constitutes a foul have also been updated to hopefully reduce unnecessary stoppage.

A higher threshold will be applied to contact between players to allow the game to flow better without so many free-kicks.

Dissent

In stark contrast to the rule above, the leniency around dissent will be reduced meaning players might be more likely to be booked when play is stopped.

Any player that runs from a distance to speak to officials will be shown a yellow card.

This also applies to whenever more than one player approaches the referee, with at least one but potentially more being cautioned.

The technical area

Simon Jordan claimed last season that the FA needed to come down further on Jurgen Klopp and the rest for referee confrontation.

And if managers or indeed any club officials are sent off next season then they will not be allowed to watch the game from the stands.

Instead, they have been relegated to the TVs in the dressing rooms and must out-of-sight of the pitch.

There will also be automatic yellows issues if there is ever more than one coach in the technical area - with harsher penalties for managers that leave it.
