‘This Liverpool team is on par with Suarez-inspired side…and they could go one better’ – Former Reds striker Emile Heskey on talkSPORT

Emile Heskey has told talkSPORT Jurgen Klopp’s new-look Liverpool side is as good as the Luis Suarez-inspired team which finished as Premier League runners up in the 2013/14 season.

But he believes they can go one better and finally end the club’s long wait for a top flight crown.

Liverpool pulled clear at the top of the table this weekend following a shake-up which saw the Reds demolish Watford 6-1 and rivals Manchester City and Arsenal drop points.

The Merseysiders have been one of the most exciting teams to watch this term, with their dazzling attacking play drawing comparisons with the ‘SAS’ team which came agonisingly close to the title three years ago.

Heskey believes Klopp has assembled a squad on par with that celebrated line-up, but has tipped them to go all the way this year.

“Liverpool have been a breath of fresh air,” the former Reds striker told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“Going forward they look so fluid with Coutinho, Firmino and Mane. It’s funny how they don’t have an actual striker up there, they just have players who are all inter-changing.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a better team than with Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling, but they play a very similar brand of football with a fluid front three.

“They’re playing some really exciting football and they’ll probably go just as close, if not one step further, this season. They’re looking very good to do it.”

As breathtaking as their attacking display was against Watford, Liverpool’s back four still showed its fragile side with both the players and fans voicing their disappointment that the visitors managed to find the net.

The Red have kept just one clean sheet in the league this season, in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United, and Heskey believes Klopp could look to strengthen his options when the January window opens.

“If Klopp is looking to go into the transfer market, that’s where he’ll probably be looking at - defensively,” added the ex-England international.

“At the moment it’s like they’re just looking to outscore teams, they know they’re going to score goals. If their opponent scores two, they make sure they score four.

“A lot of teams will work from the back upwards; make sure everything is solid at the back first, and then you can work on everything going forward.

“Liverpool seem to be doing everything the other way around.”
