Exclusive – Arsenal legend Smith recalls famous 1989 First Division title triumph

On the 25th anniversary of Arsenal’s dramatic 1988/89 First Division title triumph, Gunners legend Alan Smith joined talkSPORT to share his memories of the crucial 2-0 victory over Liverpool on the final day of the season.
The race for the crown came down to the final day of the campaign, with the second-placed Gunners needing to beat league leaders, and defending champions, Liverpool by two clear goals at Anfield to lift the trophy.
The teams entered the break at 0-0, but Smith tucked away a header shortly after the restart to give the visitors hope.
And, just as Liverpool began to slow the pace of game down in the closing stages, Michael Thomas ended a swift stoppage-time counter attack with a neat finish over Reds stopper Bruce Grobbelaar to clinch the club’s first title in 18 years on goals scored.
