Ballon d’Or 2016 shortlist: How the list of winners have changed since 2000

As we wait for France Football to reveal who wins the 61st edition of its Ballon d'Or award, talkSPORT looks at how the best players in the world have changed since 2000.

The French magazine recently announced its association with FIFA, which began in 2010, will cease to exist and things will return to how they were, with voting by a select group of journalists, though the three finalists will not now be announced before the famous golden ball is presented.

Previously, the Ballon d’Or was awarded to the best European player between 1956 and 1994, with footballers from any continent playing at a European club then included from 1995 to 2009. FIFA, meanwhile, had a World Player of the Year award running since 1991 before the two merged.

The list above is based on the Ballon d'Or/European Footballer of the Year (1956-2009) and the FIFA Ballon d'Or (2009-present) rankings.
