Tino Livramento was adjudged to have handled from point-blank range after a cross bounced off his chest and onto his elbow.

Referee Szymon Marciniak was not interested until being sent to the monitor by VAR.

Kylian Mbappe duly converted and the match finished 1-1, putting a huge dent in Newcastle's hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages.

Reacting to the decision, Newcastle legend Shearer tweeted: “Do me a f***ing favour man. What a load of s***. #VAR."

However, Gunners fans were quick to remind Shearer of his reaction to recent VAR controversy that went Newcastle's way.

Anthony Gordon's winner against Arsenal earlier this month was allowed to stand after a lengthy review to check a possible foul, offside and ball out of play.

It left Gunners manager Mikel Arteta seething and facing punishment from the FA, but Shearer was delighted.

“Well done ref. You’re the man #NEWARS,” the all-time leading Premier League goalkeeper said at the time.

A number of Arsenal fans bombarded Shearer's tweet on Tuesday night by posting his reaction to the drama earlier this month.

Another wrote: "Karma is beautiful."

A second tweeted: "Look who's complaining now!"

And a third put: "So now you've stopped respecting the refs?"

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe did not go quite as far as Arteta with his criticism of the referee's decision.

Asked if he felt a sense of injustice, the Newcastle boss said: "Yes, I do. It wasn't the right decision in my opinion.

"There are so many things to take into account at that moment, the speed first. It was a ricochet that when it is slowed down, looks completely different to the live event.

"The ball hits his chest first, comes up and hits his hand. But his hand is not in an unnatural position, they [his hands] are down by his side, but he is in a running motion.

"I feel it is a poor decision and it's hugely frustrating for us as you know how little time there is left in the game. There is nothing we can do about it now."
