talkSPORT understands De Gea, who is a free agent after leaving Old Trafford in the summer, has offered his services to the Toon Army.

The Spaniard made more than 500 appearances over a 12-year spell at Old Trafford.

His £375,000-a-week contract was not renewed despite winning the Golden Glove award during the 2022/23 season - and questions linger over his Red Devils replacement Andre Onana.

It is understood 32-year-old De Gea would need to accept significantly reduced wages at St James' Park.

Eddie Howe currently has goalkeepers Martin Dubravka, Lloris Karius and Mark Gillespie at his disposal.
