Now, he has had to be withdrawn from the clash against the Toffees and be replaced by Levi Colwill after appearing to be injured once again.

The defender was consoled by teammate Conor Gallagher and his manager Mauricio Pochettino as he left the field unassisted.

The Blues academy graduate suffered a hamstring injury in his side's 1-1 draw against Liverpool on the opening day of the Premier League season.

He then came back for the 2-2 draw with Arsenal in October.

After missing the 3-2 win over Brighton following his one-game suspension for his two yellow cards at Newcastle, he returned for the 2-1 loss at Manchester United in mid-week.

However, Chelsea had to continue the rest of their clash at Goodison Park without their captain once again.

Speaking after the match, Pochettino said: "He felt something in his hamstring. It's not so nice for him to suffer another injury. He is an important player."

James has played just 363 Premier League minutes this season.

He's contributed one assist in all competitions in that time.

James was given the captain's armband for this season by Pochettino following Cesar Azpilicueta's departure in the summer.

Things appeared to go from bad to worse for the Chelsea boss with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez coming off late on in the game with an apparent injury.

The result on the pitch reflected how disappointing an afternoon it was with Everton going on to win 2-0 with Abdoulaye Doucoure and Lewis Dobbin getting the goals.
