Cristian Romero is set to be sidelined for four to five weeks with an injury.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou spoke to the press before his side's clash against Brighton on Thursday and confirmed his defender has suffered a hamstring strain.

"Not so great with Romero," he said. "He had a scan and he's got a hamstring strain. We're looking at four to five weeks with him."

Tottenham now face Brighton, Bournemouth, Burnley in the FA Cup, Manchester United and Brentford before the end of January.

The 25-year-old - who has made 15 appearances for Spurs this season - suffered the injury against Everton on December 23.

Spurs are already dealing with the absence of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, who are also out injured.

When asked about the latter returning to training soon, he said: "Where did he say that? Ah the darts. I wouldn't put too much in what the players say mate.

"I don't think [he'll be back for] Burnley, maybe for Man United but I wouldn't know until I see him in training. He's at the tail end of it now."

Van de Ven made 12 appearances before his hamstring injury he sustained in the 4-1 loss to Chelsea.

Tottenham are already looking at who could come in as back-ups for their absent defenders - including Nice's Jean Clair-Todibo.

Ben Davies has slotted in at centre-back in Van de Ven's absence.

Eric Dier also came on in the 2-0 win over Everton, replacing Romero when he was taken off injured.

Maddison, meanwhile, is expected to be back in January.
