Manchester United also held exploratory talks over a move for the Germany international but Spurs have jumped ahead of them in the race.

And RB Leipzig have appeared to confirm that a transfer is merely moments away with their latest statement.

Posting on social media, the Bundesliga club wrote: "Timo Werner is not in the squad for today's friendly, as he is in talks with another club."

RB Leipzig are taking on Swiss side St Gallen in a friendly with the Bundesliga set to return to action next week after being on a winter break.

But a move for Werner to Spurs will be quite the shock in a move that has seemingly come out of nowhere.

Post-match press conference: Ange Postecoglou (FA Cup: Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Burnley)

The 27-year-old spent two years with the club's London rivals Chelsea, where he won the Champions League in 2021.

However, he was never truly prolific at Stamford Bridge where he scored 23 times in 89 appearances - including just 10 in the Premier League.

Nevertheless, Tottenham are in need of reinforcements with injuries taking a toll on their squad as well as Heung-min Son jetting off with South Korea this month for the Asia Cup.

Richarlison has seen some form return while Brennan Johnson is still adapting to the squad.

But one of Werner's key traits is his ability to press, something that Postecoglou has been desperate to bring to his side.

With the German's arrival appearing to be imminent, his first game could come as early as next weekend when Spurs take on Manchester United.

The Red Devils had also been linked with the forward, which was condemned by talkSPORT pundit Dean Saunders.

Meanwhile, Eric Dier looks set to make the move the other way with Bayern Munich set to snap up the defender, whose contract runs out this summer.

Harry Kane has been keen to reunite with the England international, who has effectively been frozen out in north London.
