West Ham 1-1 Tottenham LIVE REACTION: Spurs miss chance to move into Premier League’s top four after frantic draw in derby

Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham at the London Stadium as they dropped points in the Champions League race.

Spurs had the chance to leapfrog Aston Villa before their game against Manchester City tomorrow but they couldn’t take advantage.

Tottenham missed the chance to move into the top four

Brennan Johnson gave Ange Postecoglou’s side an early lead as he tapped in from close range after Timo Werner’s low cross.

That goal rewarded the visitors for their positive start but they were pegged back soon after.

Against the run of play, Kurt Zouma equalised from a corner and that reinvigorated the Hammers following a slow opening 15 minutes.

Their threat from set pieces frightened Tottenham all evening and they piled on the pressure towards the end of the first half.

That pressure would disappear after the break though, with Spurs dominant.

However, David Moyes’ men would have the best chance to score a winner through Michail Antonio

Antonio shrugged off Micky van de Ven, leaving him one-on-one with Guglielmo Vicario from six yards, but he shot straight at the goalkeeper.

That chance was the only major opportunity for both teams in the second half and neither could find a winner as the game ended level.

  • West Ham vs Tottenham: Match facts

    • West Ham have conceded at least once in each of their last 10 Premier League games, shipping 24 goals in total in this run. Their 54 goals conceded overall this season is just one fewer than they shipped in the whole of last term, while only in 2010-11 (1.84) have they had a higher goals conceded per game average than their 1.8 so far in 2023-24.
    • Having won none of their six midweek (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) Premier League games last season (D2 L4), West Ham are unbeaten in their four such games so far this term (W2 D2).
    • Tottenham have lost three of their last five Premier League London derby matches (W2), as many as they had in their previous 19 (W10 D6). In the competition’s history, Spurs have conceded 398 goals in such games, and could be the second side to ship 400 after West Ham.

He'll be hoping he can mark it with another win...

James Ward-Prowse has been speaking about the importance of tonight's derby on West Ham's season run-in.

“I’d not been at the club that long before the last Tottenham match, and I hadn’t realised just how much it meant to the fans,” Ward-Prowse said.

“Of course I’d played in derbies before [for Southampton against Portsmouth] and there’s always extra hype around those games.

"But I think we have to try and put emotion to one side and concentrate on the football, and getting all three points.

“Saturday at Newcastle was disappointing, but the last chunk of the season is really exciting.

"We’ve still got a great opportunity to finish well in the league and in Europe, so we need to stay positive and do everything we can to do that.”

David Moyes is looking forward to hosting a London derby tonight.

“Over the last three or four years, we've always tried to challenge the big teams at home, and we've enjoyed some really good results," Moyes said.

“There are a lot of really good teams in the Premier League, with top players, and we always want to take the game to them and give our supporters something to shout about.

“We want to keep the good times coming, and a London derby is something that's easy to get excited about.

"We're looking forward to it, and hopefully we can pick up the right result.”

Ange Postecoglou delivered a blunt response to questions about Tottenham's top four battle with Manchester United.

Asked if Man United are still in the race, Postecoglou said: "Can you see us challenging Manchester City [for the title]?

“No? Well they're only eight points ahead of us.

"If there's eight points [gap], you either think we can catch Man City who are eight points ahead of us or you think Man United can catch us.

“What's important for me is that we want to finish the season strong and keep building on the foundation of being a team that hopefully in 12 months' time people are looking at us differently and talking about us differently.”

  • West Ham vs Tottenham: Match facts

    • Tottenham are winless in their last three Premier League away games against West Ham (D1 L2), their longest run without a win at the Hammers since a run of six between 1995 and 2001.
    • West Ham are looking to achieve the Premier League double over Tottenham for the third time, previously doing so in 1998-99 and 2013-14.
    • West Ham have conceded 19 goals in their eight Premier League London derby matches this season, suffering 5-0 (vs Fulham) and 6-0 (vs Arsenal) defeats so far. Only Fulham in 2018-19 (2.7) have conceded more goals-per-game in London derbies in a single Premier League campaign than West Ham’s 2.4 this term.

West Ham's front three all scored against Newcastle last week.

Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus are firing this season and Michail Antonio returned to the team with a bang.

Manager David Moyes has been speaking about the trio pre-match.

“Our attacking players have been very good in recent weeks, and that was the case again against Newcastle at the weekend," he said.

“I thought some of the individual performances were excellent, and Michail Antonio, Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen all got on the scoresheet.

“Mick getting another goal is very important, and he took his chance very well.

"All round I think our forward play is very good, and hopefully it is again tonight.”

Heung-Min Son captains Tottenham against tonight and he continues to create history with the club, but he shouldn't be considered a Premier League legend.

That is according to talkSPORT host Andy Townsend who felt the term was too strong for the Spurs forward.

Asked if winning some medals would help earn him the label, he told talkSPORT Breakfast: "He [Son] is a top player, he's a great; that word 'legend' should only be used in the right context."

He then joked: "Someone put that on your script about me earlier and it's not right."

"I think that Son has been a great player and great operator for Spurs, but a legend? No."
