Aaron Ramsdale to Newcastle makes perfect sense – but Arsenal star’s arrival would spell bad news for Nick Pope

Newcastle have been told that a move for Arsenal goalkeeper makes 'ideal sense'.
But talkSPORT co-hosts Ally McCoist and Jeff Stelling believe his arrival at St James' Park would see his England international Nick Pope depart.
The Gunners shot-stopper has previously been admired by the Magpies, and is now being linked with a potential move to the North East once again following a lack of game time at the Emirates.
According to the , Newcastle have rekindled their interest in Ramsdale, with Eddie Howe remaining a big fan of his having signed him at Bournemouth.
The 25-year-old is wanting regular football again after becoming Arsenal's no.2 following the arrival of Brentford loanee David Raya last summer.
The Geordies already have two star goalkeepers in Martin Dubravka and Pope, but with the pair being 35 and 31 respectively, the club are looking for a younger option in goal.
When asked whether the move would be good for all parties, talkSPORT Breakfast co-host Ally McCoist said: "Yes, although there will be a bit of healthy competition once Nick Pope is back fit.
"I think, in all fairness, Dubravka has come in and done a reasonable job, but I think Pope would automatically come back in once he's fit.
"He's [nearly] 32 years of age. Goalkeepers can play a lot longer than perhaps outfield players, it would certainly make ideal sense for Ramsdale."
Jeff Stelling agreed with McCoist, but stated Newcastle would also face a big decision if they do decide to bring in Ramsdale.
He remarked: "It makes ideal sense for Newcastle, but it means Nick Pope leaves the club. He doesn't stay as a number two.
"They'll keep Dubravka as no.2 and sell Nick Pope, and I don't think there will be any shortage of takers because he's a fine goalkeeper."
"Well that's the question," McCoist added. "I think Newcastle have got to weigh up, do they think Ramsdale is a better goalkeeper than Nick Pope?
"Because I think Jeff's right, Pope isn't going to be hanging about and play second fiddle at the age 32, so big decision."
Since signing following Burnley's relegation in 2022, Pope, who still has two years remaining on his current deal, has made 62 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle.
Meanwhile, Ramsdale, who has been limited to just six Premier League matches this term, had been Arsenal's no.1 before falling down Mikel Arteta's pecking order.
His contract also expires in 2026.
