Bruno Guimaraes could benefit from a bonkers Premier League loophole if he is sent off against Tottenham on Saturday.

The Newcastle midfielder goes into Saturday's St James' Park clash on nine yellow cards and is at risk of a two-match suspension.

Top-flight rules stipulate that any player will receive a two-game ban if they are booked ten times in the opening 32 matches.

And with Newcastle set to take part in their 32nd league match, it represents the final chance for Guimaraes to receive an unwanted ban.

But incredibly, should the Brazilian be sent off courtesy of two cautions, he would only be out for one game.

It is a loophole that recently saw Anthony Gordon escape an extended suspension following his sending off late on in the Magpies' 4-3 win over West Ham last month.

The England international received his ninth and tenth yellow cards of the campaign, but due to his dismissal, he stayed on eight bookings.

Should Guimaraes be shown two yellows against Spurs, he would remain on nine and avoid a longer ban.

Depending on the severity of a suspension, he could be ruled out of the games with Crystal Palace and Sheffield United.

But the ex-Lyon star has shown great restraint in last few months having gone ten matches without finding himself in the referee's notebook.

Following the 32-game cut-off for ten yellow cards, the next threshold is 15 yellows from 38 fixtures.

This would result in a three-match ban, though no one in Premier League history has racked up as many cautions.

Guimaraes has been a key player for the Magpies this season - chipping in with four goals and seven assists from 43 outings in all competitions.

He brought up 100 appearances for the Toon in last weekend's trip to Fulham, where he scored the only goal of the game.
