Sorry AZ Alkmaar, there's no room for players from your 2008/09 Dutch title-winning side!

That was just one of the excellent teams Louis van Gaal coached, and now - as the legendary manager announces his retirement - we've compiled a starting XI comprising his best players.

The criteria? How good they were under the management of Van Gaal.

That means there is also no room for the likes of Carles Puyol, Xavi and Andres Iniesta, who all played under the Dutchman, but as youngsters yet to reach the heights they would later in their careers.

But in the gallery above you will see that the all-time Van Gaal XI is still packed full of world class talent.

That should be no surprise considering that he won seven league titles in Holland, Spain and Germany, among 16 major honours that include the Champions League, having coached Ajax, Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar, Bayern Munich and Manchester United to silverware.

Van Gaal also led the Netherlands to third place at the 2014 World Cup.
