Real Madrid 2-0 Sevilla: Ronaldo brace secures UEFA Super Cup victory

Real Madrid sent out a message to La Liga and the rest of the world as they comfortably brushed aside Sevilla 2-0 to win the UEFA Super Cup in the Cardiff City Stadium.

The world's most expensive player Gareth Bale made his return home, while World Cup Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez started in his competitive debut for Los Blancos, but both were overshadowed by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese was at his mesmerising best as he grabbed an excellent brace to seal an easy victory.

Real Madrid, who could only finish third behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in La Liga last season, lay siege to Sevilla's goal throughout the opening minutes with both Bale and Ronaldo going close to opening the scoring.

As it was it happened to be the latter, with the ultimate galactico beautifully sliding in at the backpost to prod in the Welshman's brilliant cross from five yards on 30 minutes.

Fellow debutant Toni Kroos completed a star-studded Real side and the Champions League winners added their second shortly after the break, following brilliant interplay which involved the German World Cup winner and Karim Benzema.

The duo combined with Ronaldo before the Portuguese star hammered the ball past Sevilla goalkeeper, Beto, who it could easily be said should have done better with the shot.

The Europa League winners desperately rallied as they tried to find a way back but instead it was Rodriguez who could have marked his debut with a goal, as Beto atoned for his earlier errort with a brilliant save from the Colombian.

Instead the night belonged to the World Footballer of the Year, Ronaldo, as Real Madrid ran out easy winners to lift their first trophy of the season.
