Robert Lewandowski could finally be given Ballon d’Or award

Robert Lewandowski could finally land the Ballon d’Or award that many felt he deserved to win in 2020.
The Poland international was the favourite to scoop the 2020 edition, however, the award was later scrapped due to the COVID pandemic.
Lewandowski was at the peak of his powers having fired Bayern Munich to the Treble, including the Champions League final victory over Paris Saint-Germain.
He netted a staggering 55 goals in 47 games across all competitions and was widely tipped as a shoo-in for the award.
The award evaded him but there could be good news for the Barcelona striker with France Football, the magazine responsible for the award, considering presenting him with the award many believed he deserved.
"In 2020 and 2021, I had the best years of my career," Lewandowski recalled in a recent interview with German outlet Sport Bild. "Recently a friend sent me the statistics. I scored 100 goals in 85 games."
He was in the running for the award in 2021 but was pipped by serial Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.
However, according to , an investigation into Messi’s victory in 2021 opened earlier this year over claims PSG had pressured France Football into favouring the Argentine.
Lewandowski finished second that year but now the magazine are reportedly concerned that the investigation has had a negative effect on its reputation and will therefore consider handing the striker the 2020 award.
"Of course I would have liked to receive the Ballon d'Or one day. It's not that I'm angry or sad because I don't have this trophy yet, but my feeling is that I could have won it in either year,” Lewandowski added.
"If I received the 2020 Ballon d'Or four years later, I would not feel offended. It would be a great honour and I would accept the award."
Meanwhile, representatives of the 35-year-old are set to sit down with Barcelona bosses to discuss his wages as the Catalan club look to make changes to its attack next season.

Lewandowski’s wages are set to rise to £26million as per the terms of the contract signed two years ago, however, the club want to renegotiate.
Barcelona hope to count on the striker next season but as he nears his 36th birthday, club chiefs want to restructure his salary ahead of the new season.
